What to Do After a Virginia Beach Car Accident

If you’re involved in an accident at an intersection in Virginia Beach, you should follow these steps to protect yourself:

  1. Stop immediately and don’t leave the scene, even if the accident is a minor “fender-bender.”
  2. Protect the scene by turning on your hazard lights and using emergency flares (especially at night) to signal to other drivers that disabled vehicles may be in the road or on the side of the road.
  3. Call the police. If anyone was hurt in the crash, the law requires you to alert law enforcement. Even if there are no injuries, you’ll still want to have a police report on file for any insurance claims you need to make. Give them an accurate statement about what happened when they arrive on the scene.
  4. Take pictures of the crash scene. Take pictures of the position of the vehicles and any damage. Also take pictures of the surrounding scene, including skid marks, road signs, and weather conditions.
  5. Exchange insurance information and report the accident to your insurer.
  6. Seek medical attention right away. Get a thorough examination as soon as possible if you don’t require emergency treatment and ambulance transport.
  7. Contact an experienced car accident lawyer. Having legal representation after a crash is crucial to getting the compensation you deserve.
